In late August, most families are looking at Common App, essays, and Early Decision deadlines. But there is one item that becomes an unfixable mistake if you leave it until November: your AP course and exam registration.
College Board has published the full 2026-27 calendar, and this year brings three substantive changes that directly affect how students in Taiwan and across Asia should prepare. Here is the official timeline, the fees, and the problem that is unique to international students.
Why This Has to Happen in August
Because AP is not a test you can sign up for on your own.
Unlike the SAT or TOEFL, where a student registers online with a credit card, AP Exams are ordered by the school. A student cannot register directly with College Board. You need a school AP Coordinator to place you inside that school’s exam order.
And schools have hard deadlines:
- Preferred ordering deadline: October 2, 2026
- Final ordering deadline: November 13, 2026 (11:59 p.m. ET)
Exams added after November 13 carry a $40 late order fee per exam. More importantly, that is only College Board’s deadline — individual schools set their own, earlier internal deadlines. Which means the real window for action is right now.
Three Big Changes for 2026-27
1. From May 2027, AP Exams Are Fully Digital
College Board states that beginning in 2027, all AP Exams are digital, with most delivered through Bluebook in one of two modes: fully digital (everything in Bluebook) or hybrid digital (multiple choice in Bluebook, free-response handwritten in paper booklets).
New for 2027:
- AP Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish Language and Culture move to fully digital exams. Students hear audio prompts and record spoken responses directly in Bluebook. CD players, language labs, handheld recorders, and the DAC app are gone. Students need wired headsets with microphones.
- AP Spanish Literature and Culture becomes fully digital.
- AP Statistics moves from hybrid to fully digital — no free-response booklets.
- AP Music Theory becomes hybrid digital, with sight-singing recorded in Bluebook.
The practical impact on students in Taiwan is concentrated on AP Chinese, long treated as a reliable 5. Beyond the recording change, all six world language courses were revised for 2026-27: students now complete a course project before exam day and submit a Personalized Project Reference (PPR) through the AP Digital Portfolio by April 30, which they may reference during the exam. That is a new workflow, not something you can improvise in the final week.
2. Two New AP Courses Launch
The AP Career Kickstart program adds two courses in 2026-27:
- AP Business with Personal Finance
- AP Cybersecurity
Worth noting: College Board is waiving the unused/canceled exam fee (normally $40 per exam) for a new AP course in its launch year. For a student curious about a new subject but unsure about committing, 2026-27 is the lowest-risk year to try.
3. Start Times Have Changed in Some Locations
Beginning with the 2027 administration, exam start times have changed in some locations to prevent secure content from being disclosed across time zones. Schools in the lower 48 states, Hawaii, and Washington, D.C. still start at 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. local time. If you are testing in Taiwan or elsewhere in Asia, confirm your actual start time with the administering AP Coordinator rather than assuming last year’s schedule holds.

Fees:
- $99 per exam at schools in the U.S., U.S. territories, Canada, and DoDEA schools
- $129 per exam everywhere else — including Taiwan (fees may vary at College Board–authorized test centers outside the U.S.)
- $40 late order fee per exam ordered November 14 – March 12
- $40 unused/canceled exam fee for exams canceled after November 13 or not taken
- $40 late-testing fee where applicable (most late-testing reasons do not incur it)
Do the arithmetic: five AP Exams in Taiwan is $645 before anything goes wrong. Add cancellation penalties and the cost of a sloppy course-selection decision becomes very concrete.
The Hardest Problem for Students in Taiwan: No AP at Your School
This is the question we field most often at Ivy-Way. Local Taiwanese high schools do not offer AP, and most international schools serve only their own enrolled students.
College Board’s official process:
- Search the AP Course Ledger, the official list of schools that have passed the AP Course Audit. You can filter by country, state/province, or city.
- Identify nearby schools offering the subjects you want, look up their phone number, and call — ask specifically for the AP Coordinator.
- Ask whether the school is allowing students from other schools to test there this year.
- If a coordinator agrees, that coordinator is responsible for ordering your exam materials, telling you when and where to report, and collecting your exam fees.
College Board emphasizes two things: contact schools as early in the school year as possible, because schools set their own local deadlines and policies for outside students; and the AP Course Ledger is updated every November, so if you come up empty now, check again in November for newly added schools.
One useful detail: if you only find a school after the mid-November deadline, the school may still add you at its discretion, and may request that the $40 late order fee be waived in that circumstance. Not guaranteed, but worth asking for.

How Many APs? Three Different Answers
The short version: admissions officers evaluate the choices you made inside your own environment, not an absolute number.
U.S. admissions review is context-based. Readers receive your School Profile and know exactly how many AP courses your school offers. A student who took 5 APs at a school offering 6 is far more impressive than one who took 7 at a school offering 25 while avoiding every science course.
If you attend an international school in Taiwan with AP offerings: prioritize alignment with your intended major. For a prospective engineer, AP Calculus BC plus Physics C says vastly more than a padded AP Psychology. Four to eight courses is typically a reasonable range — provided your GPA survives it.
If you attend a local Taiwanese high school and must self-study: the value is not in volume, it is in demonstrated academic motivation. Two to four self-studied APs in your area of interest, scored 4 or 5, is a genuinely strong signal — you pursued college-level work without institutional support. Eight self-studied APs producing a wall of 3s reads the opposite way.
If you attend high school in the U.S.: take the most rigorous load your school offers, but ask your counselor the honest question: is one more AP worth a 0.1 drop in GPA? Usually not.
Do Not Assume AP Credit Transfers
Many families treat AP as a tuition-saving strategy. At many public universities, that holds. At highly selective private universities, it often does not — plenty of schools grant placement (skip the intro course) without granting credit, require a 5 to award anything, or exclude certain subjects entirely.
Do not run on secondhand information. College Board’s AP Credit Policy Search lets you check, school by school and subject by subject, exactly what each score earns. Ten minutes now prevents three years of misdirected effort.
What to Do Between Now and November 13
- This week: write down your intended major and work backward to the 2–4 core APs it actually requires.
- Early September: confirm your school’s internal AP ordering deadline (almost always earlier than Nov 13). If you need an outside school, start calling now.
- Mid-September: run AP Credit Policy Search on your target colleges and cut subjects that earn nothing.
- Before October 2: finish your registration to make the preferred ordering deadline and avoid every downstream fee and risk.
The AP decision window closes in mid-November. Families who handle it well have usually finished deciding by the end of August.
