在美國的高中生涯裡，學生必須從國中或高中就開始發掘自己的興趣。透過課內或課外的上課或活動，學生必須開始發現自己的強項及興趣，這樣在申請大學的時候才可以很明確的跟大學說自己想讀的方向，並且可以告訴大學自己過去相關的經歷，而不是 “我什麼都沒上過，所以我不知道”、“因為我爸媽叫我讀英文，所以我就選擇英文” 這種沒說服力的答案。
